From the Archives and Spotlight Collections from Chicago Journals

In 2023, the University of Chicago Press Journals Division launched a new online feature called “From the Archives” to bring new readership to less recent and archival scholarship. Each month, our team works to choose a different topic, and articles are selected for inclusion on the page via keyword search. “From the Archives” topics have included affirmative action, digital humanities, fashion, indigenous knowledge, literacy, opioids, surveillance, and more. Articles featured in these collections often date from the earliest years of our journals’ operations, stretching back a century or more, and provide a fascinating window into the changing landscape of scholarship over the decades of our work.

In 2025, we decided to expand this feature to include collections of more recent scholarship, with an emphasis on topics of pressing current interest. Recent subjects of these “Spotlight” collections have included inflation, artificial intelligence, and tariffs. This allows us to highlight contemporary research that speaks to some of the conditions and concerns of our current moment. Like our “From the Archives” collections, the “Spotlight” feature uses keyword search to assemble articles from across our journals portfolio, and from across a wide range of areas of study.

Our “From the Archives” and “Spotlight” collections allow us to present tranches of research that cut across discipline and time. Whether it’s by reflecting the ever-expanding nature and history of academic research, or by providing important context for the present, these initiatives give us an opportunity to #TeamUP and showcase the persistent significance of the scholarship we publish.
